Newcastle midfielder Dan Gosling has been fined £30,000 by the FA for breaching betting regulations during a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The 24-year-old admitted the charges and requested a personal hearing before being brought before an Independent Regulatory Commission.
A statement on the FA website said: "Gosling, who requested a personal hearing, admitted multiple breaches of FA Rule E8(b) for misconduct in relation to betting."
When the situation emerged last week, Gosling's mother leapt to his defence, telling a newspaper: "He admits that he was stupid, and was betting out of boredom more than anything else.
"He couldn't even walk with his knee injury, and the online betting firm he was using were fine while he was losing.
"It was only a few days ago when I found out. I'm gutted for Dan obviously. He's never betted on any of the clubs that he has played with or been on loan at, so that's the good part - it was just silly little bets.
"No-one from the club came and supported him when he was laid up. He's fine in himself, he said that knows he's been stupid and he will take what's coming to him."
