What We Learned: Premier League Matchday One
The first round of the English Premier League has come and gone in a flash, producing some explosive results, familiar headlines and serious questions.
Football fans have been salivating at the prospect of the return of the EPL, and did it deliver. Goals, birds dropping s**t in player's mouths and managers already under the pump, here are the five things we learned from match-day one.
Same old story at Old Trafford
Old mate David Moyes must be feeling hard done by after guiding Manchester United to a 4-1 win against Swansea this time 12 months ago. Fast forward to the weekend, and in Louis van Gaal’s Premier League debut, the Red Devil’s produce a pitiful performance to be beaten by minnows Swansea. The 3-5-2 formation worked for the Netherlands, but for it to work at Manchester United, they need to sign one or two quality defenders, one of Angel Di Maria or Juan Cuadrado, and not play Ashley Young as a wing-back. The defence were a shambles against a plucky Swansea and urgently needs reinforcements, while further forward, only arguably Ander Herrera and Wayne Rooney could hold their heads high. Van Gaal has a fair bit of work to do to make United a feared force again, with Premier League teams no longer fearing the journey to Old Trafford, but relishing it.
Southampton show some heart
The Saints were brutally ransacked during the summer transfer window, particularly by their weekend opponents, with Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana all moving to Anfield. They lost their manager Mauricio Pochettino, along with Luke Shaw (Manchester United), Callum Chambers (Arsenal) and Pablo Osvaldo leaving on-loan to Inter Milan. They produced a gritty display of steely resolve against Liverpool that would have made new manager Ronald Koeman proud, with the Saints deserving at least a point despite a 2-1 loss to the Reds. They played with determination and flair, and for a side that lost was utterly stripped bare over the summer, you would’ve forgiven them for a sub-par performance. Expect Southampton to surprise a few this season.
‘SAS’ - The Sturridge and Sterling show
The dynamic duo proved on Saturday that should they both remain with the club for the foreseeable future, they could lead Liverpool into an era of dominance. Both were on the scorer’s list against Southampton and both are very exciting footballers to watch in full flight. You could argue that they are the Premier League’s most improved players, and while Sturridge struggled at times in the lone-striker role, he will grow into the role just as he did in Luis Suarez’s absence early last season.
Arsenal stunned into comeback
The Gunners were stunned into a fightback against a manager-less Crystal Palace, fighting back from an early deficit to take the three points. Aaron Ramsey once again proved how important he is to Arsenal’s title-chances being in the right place at the right time for the winner, while Alexis Sanchez had a modest debut at the Emirates Stadium. Palace were admirable in defeat and while the Gunners did not particularly produce their best football, the Arsenal of past years just may have dropped that game. They are now a developed force mentally, capable of grinding out the three points on off days, which is a trait known to most successful clubs in Europe.
New signings sublime in professional Chelsea win
In their 3-1 away to Premier League newcomers Burnley, Chelsea demonstrated why they are one of the favourites to win the league with a very workmanlike and accomplished performance. They did not panic after going 1-0 down in the early stages, with another Diego Costa goal equalising for the Blues before fellow new signing Cesc Fabregas laid in assists to Andre Schurrle and Branislav Ivanovic in a 20 minute period of domination. Chelsea just simply flicked the switch and went to a new level against a lesser opponent, and Jose Mourinho would be ecstatic with the performance of his two major signings.
