Sid Meier on PS3: You'll Be Amazed by the Possibilities
Legendary game designer and Civilization creator Sid Meier has endorsed Sony's PS3, saying that it's "light years ahead" and gamers will be "amazed by the possibilities" once developers come to grips with its power. More within...
PlayStation 3 may be off to a slow start (the console sold a little over 80K units for the second straight month) but Sony recently got a boost that can only help the console's long-term prospects. One of the industry's "game gods" (often referred to as the "father of computer gaming"), Sid Meier, has endorsed the PS3 and you'd be surprised by the kinds of games he's enjoyed playing lately.
The Director of Creative Development at Firaxis Games has been honored with all sorts of accolades for his PC game creations (Civilization, Railroad Tycoon, Alpha Centauri to name a few), but now according to an interview on PlayStation.com, Meier will turn his attention to next-generation console gaming.
"Thanks to the launch of platforms like PlayStation 3 the time is finally right for this transition," he explained. "Computers no longer have the edge on set-top systems. The technology is there; the audience is ready for deeper and more gripping experiences; and the bar's formally been raised in terms of enthusiasts' expectations. I hate to use the word convergence, but I don't know how else to describe the situation... The timing couldn't be more perfect."
Meier's comments seem to reflect a persistent trend in the industry – more and more developers who used to focus solely on the PC realm are making the transition to consoles.
Meier had nothing but good things to say about Sony's console business. "Sony's done an amazing job of establishing a quality standard and delivering on systems' promise. Look at the caliber of titles we're suddenly seeing from machines like the PlayStation 2 – the company takes a long-term view and really focuses on delivering amazing hardware right out of the box," he remarked. Sony's aim is to have the PS2 last ten years, and the company hopes the PS3 will have similar legs.
He added that it took years for developers to truly maximize the PS2, and he expects PS3 to amaze gamers in the long run. "Look at the level of content you're seeing on current-gen systems right now in the form of games like God of War II," Meier said. "Remember: The PlayStation 3 is light years ahead of this technology. As with any new platform, it's going to be a challenge and take designers some time to come to grips with the hardware. But believe me, you'll be amazed by the possibilities."
In the meantime, Meier said that there's still plenty of room to innovate in the strategy genre and he already has some interesting projects in the works, with "teams whose size ranges upwards of 50 individuals currently cranking away on a surprise or two as we speak," according to PlayStation.com.
When he's not working, 53-year-old Meier actually enjoys games that aren't very cerebral, such as Guitar Hero, Okami, Resistance, Gran Turismo 4 and Motorstorm.
