While Nintendo's PR machine kicked in today to downplay rumors of a surprise late September/ early-October launch for the Wii, I'm still not totally convinced. Japan is hungry for the Wii: The DS currently rules the Japanese gaming market with an iron fist, and all of those consumers are potential Wii buyers. In Japan, half of all games (for all consoles) in 2005 were DS games. Since the DS Lite launched, DS hardware has often accounted for more than 75% of total game consoles sold each week. Nintendo has sold over 9 million DS machines in Japan, which more than the total number of PSPs sold worldwide (!). The DS now has as many 2-million+ sellers as PlayStation 2. To put it simply, DS fuckin' pwns Japan. It's sick!
So, if Iwata & co. really mean business this fall, they should have their event and announce the official Wii price (likely between $175 and $250) and also announce that the Wii will be available in Japan on Friday, September 22nd--the first day of TGS. Megaton strike! Fanboys faint. We all awaken Friday morning to Wii marketing plastered all over Tokyo and chaotic crowds of salarymen, kids, and housewives fighting over the last copy of Wario Ware Smooth Moves. All us game journalists are too busy waiting in line to actually attend TGS. Sony am cry.
In this scenario, the U.S. launch goes on as planned...probably November 6th or something. Meanwhile, Japan goes batshit insane for Wii, just like they do for DS
