(RTTNews) - Thursday, the British pound plunged to an all time-low against the European currency on speculation of an aggressive rate cut by the Bank of England to revive the economy. The pound also showed weakness against the US dollar and slumped to a new multi-year low versus the Swiss franc. On the other hand, the pound edged higher against the Japanese yen.
Interest rates in the UK could follow the US and Japan and head down to zero per cent, a leading member of the Bank of England's monetary policy committee (MPC) stated today.
He explained there were technical problems over having a zero per cent base rate, as banks' deposits at the Bank of England are paid at 0.25 per cent under the base rate.
In economic news from UK, retail sales unexpectedly rose 0.3% month-on-month in November, data from the Office for National Statistics showed today. Economists had expected a 0.6% fall. The November increase follows a 0.3% fall in October, which was revised from an originally reported 0.1% decline.
The British pound lost ground against the US dollar after hitting a high of 1.5619 at 12:45 am ET Thursday. At 4:20 am ET, the pound-dollar pair declined to 1.5365, compared to 1.5538 hit late New York Wednesday. The pair is currently trading at 1.5433.
The British pound plunged to a fresh record low of 0.9509 against the European currency at 4:50 am ET Thursday. The euro-pound pair closed Wednesday's North American session at 0.9284.
The Munich-based Ifo Institute for Economic Research said today its business climate index for Germany dropped to 82.6 in December from 85.8 in November. That marked the lowest reading since Ifo started compiling data in 1991. Economists had expected the indicator to fall to 84.
The 15-nation currency traded down against its Swiss counterpart during Thursday's early deals. At 4:50 am ET, the pound-franc pair slumped to a new multi-year low of 1.6102, compared to Wednesday's closing value of 1.6662.
According to provisional results issued today by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office retail sales increased 2.9% year-on-year in October in real terms after adjusting for sales days and inflation. Economists had expected the annual growth rate to slow to 2% from 6.4% recorded in September. In nominal terms turnover rose 4.3% from the previous year.
