Real Madrid’s seemingly incombustible left-back, Roberto Carlos, appears to be reaching the point of burnout at the Bernabéu. According to reports emanating from Spain, the Brazilian veteran hasn’t so much had enough of the rising tide of crisis at the Merengue club as had enough of carrying the can for the Spanish club’s myriad woes.
“My departure is something that’s now totally decided. I feel that my time at Real Madrid has reached the point where I’ve attained the best I can attain – both personally and for the club – and should think about a new destination.”
The defender admits to having suffered a lot over the past months as minor problems have turned into major trophy-centred headaches in Madrid. “There are days when I find it really difficult to get to sleep. I try, but can’t. All of this wears you down day in day out, and there comes a time when you get overtired, worn out.”
Roberto Carlos also points at a worsening climate at the Bernabéu. “Every day when I arrive I feel an enormous pressure to solve everything myself. There’s always pressure at Madrid, but sometimes it gets personalised. It’s never enough to be second here, every single season there’s demand for at least one trophy.”
As to his potential destination; Chelsea and Fenerbahçe have been the first to inquire about Roberto Carlos. The Turkish club appears ready to make an all-out offensive by offering the 33 year-old a three-year contract worth close to 5 million Euros.
There’s an outside chance that he’ll return back home to the country he left over a decade ago. “Sometimes I think about returning to my country, spend more time with my kids and so on, but the world of football is an unpredictable one, so we’ll have to see what happens.
