I actually stopped using steam sometime around 2003 (shortly after its release?) because I couldn't handle the terrible interface. Basically it was just for Counterstrike-style games and I was pissed the program sucked so badly.
I was quite pissed when they launched this service. I must admit, it turned out better than I could have imagined.
I miss that skin...remember when people raged about switchting from CS 1.5 to steam...ahh good times
As someone who raged at the change, I can say that it was well deserved. First, CS1.6 was not a definitive step up from 1.5. Even worse, though, was that Steam was a total pile of balls when it was first released: friends/chat worked (but not at all well), it was slow and bulky, and only got in the way of playing games. I still argue that the jump from the days of CS1.5 to CS1.6/Steam was not actually a jump forward.
Then again, I am in love with Steam as it is now, and understand that if it weren't for the first release it wouldn't be the same as it is now.
Yup. Pretty crazy what steam is now. I still remember waking up the morning Steam got released and signing up for an account before I went to jr. high (and got a 5 digit steamid, which I still have!) Everyone hated Steam back then because the only people using it were people playing Counter-Strike and HL mods, and it (Steam) fucking sucked.
It might just be that I had a bad computer, but I remember it being a huge resource hog. I could browse the internet and play other games just fine normally, but when Steam was running it felt like "shut. down. everything else."
quite honestly it was the main reason a I quit CS S in 2005. It crashed a lot and was never playable offline (I liked using the bots to train) I'm glad it has changed and it's now a great service.
The original Steam actually put me off online PC gaming for a couple of years when it came out.
I remember being continually pissed at Steam when it first came about. The goddamn thing froze at least 75% of the time.
Pero nada, que es un invent colectivo a escala global para hacer creer a la gente que nadie odiaba steam.
