An Australian man who was paralysed after swallowing a slug has died.
Sydney rugby player Sam Ballard was 19 when he ate the slug on a dare from his mates in 2010.
Falling ill, the young man was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he was found to be infected by rat lungworm. Found in rodents, the worm can sometimes infect snails or slugs with the parasite if they consume the rodents' excrement.
He contracted eosinophilic meningo-encephalitis, which some people recover from. Ballard did not.
