LUPANE — An 18-year-old woman from Zikhungwa village in Lupane who killed her newly-born baby by flushing him down her sister’s toilet was last Wednesday sentenced to three months for infanticide.
On May 7, Pricilla Tshuma visited her elder sister in Lupane and told her she would be proceeding to her rural home in Zikhungwa village in a few days’ time.
Tshuma did not disclose she was pregnant and almost due.
On May 8 at 5am, she went to the toilet and gave birth to a live baby boy.
The baby cried during birth. The sister and her husband heard the baby’s cry.
Tshuma then shoved the infant into the toilet bowl head first and flushed in an effort to dispose of the baby. The baby did not go through the system and this led to its death.
When the sister went to check what was going on, she discovered that Tshuma had given birth and the baby was already dead. Tshuma was taken to St Luke’s Hospital for examination and treatment.
A report was later made to the police, leading to Tshuma’s arrest after it was discovered she had attempted to flush away the child. The child’s body was taken to Mpilo Hospital for a postmortem.
Tshuma pleaded guilty to infanticide when she appeared before Lupane resident magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba.
Sanders Sibanda prosecuted.
