Mars scientists are on to some “provocative” new news about that planet - that’s the buzz.
According to Craig Covault of Aviation Week & Space Technology, he is reporting that the White House has been alerted to some new info regarding the “potential for life” on the red planet - some data that relates to why the Phoenix Mars lander was sent to its arctic landing spot in the first place: To learn about whether or not Mars could be or has been an address for life.
Covault notes in an Aviation Week & Space Technology story that the data centers on findings from the Microscopy, Electrochemistry, and Conductivity Analyzer (MECA for short) experiment on Phoenix. MECA uses four tools to examine martian soil scooped up by the lander’s robotic arm.
Three of the tools — a wet chemistry lab and two types of microscopes — analyze samples of soil with a fourth tool probing the electrical conductivity and other properties of the soil.
The MECA experiment is under the leadership of Michael Hecht at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
Meanwhile, Covault is reporting from his sources that the MECA data, mixed with data from the lander’s Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer (TEGA) “is increasingly compelling as another piece in the puzzle of life.”
Meanwhile (part II), the reason that all this seems so hush-hush is due to a future paper and press release that appears likely to pop out of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and its Science magazine.
Whatever the poop is from the scoop that’s been studied by Phoenix, that information is purportedly going through peer-review.
All this delayed news seems like a replay of the August 1996 announcement regarding the “Mars rock” - ALH84001 - when AAAS/Science magazine tried to keep it all under embargo. And just like before, the Phoenix news seems to be leaking out around the edges.
EDIT: acabo de leer en el twitter de la phoenix que es incorrecto, srry guys. Incorrecto pero no desmentido ^^
